Sprint was running a campaign - buy one iPhone, get the second iPhone for free. We purchased an iPhone with two plans and got the second phone. In about 18 months I started to notice that my monthly bills got significantly higher. I called Sprint and found out that water 18 month of my lease I have to start paying monthly for both phones or have to buy them out from Sprint for almost $200 a piece even I was still using their service. I stopped the contract and returned both phones, but one of them had a broken screen. They sent me a bill for $142 that I apparently owe them for the broken phone. I refused to pay it, contacted Sprint and explained the whole situation. A few months later they forwarded my case to collectors and put it on my credit report.
